My two favorite stores in Houston are King Dollar stores and Houston Discount Sales. Both stores offer (random) name brand items for super cheap! Houston Discount Sales is a surplus grocery store that has some expired/dented canned foods, day old bread and some dairy that is a day or two from its expiry dates. I use StillTasty.com as a reference for expiration dates. The King Dollar stores have thousands of items, lots with name brands, for $1.09 or less. There are several of these stores in Houston, the largest is on Gessner between Kempwood and Hammerly.
